Traffic Calming

Current Construction News

The Skycrest Traffic Calming Project officially began on October 6, 2008.  The 365 day project is currently abou 85% complete.  Three of the four major traffic circles have been completed and work is currently underway on the traffic circle at Cleveland St and Lake Ave.

The project is under the direction of Perry Lopez, Construction Manager for the City of Clearwater.  Ed Burke is the City's project coordinator and Rick Bennett is the City's on-the-street, day-to-day manager of the project.  The contract was awarded to Semper Fi Services, LLC.  The neighborhood construction liasion is Mike Grizzle.

If neighbors have questions or concerns about any aspect of the construction process, they are advised to contact Mr. Grizzle (941-718-0800) and Mr. Bennett (727-462-6126) directly.  It is not recommended that neighbors question the construction crews themselves for they might not receive the most accurate information.

We will continue to keep this page updated as new construction information becomes available.

History of the Project

Skycrest was singled out by the City of Clearwater in 2000 as one of the neighborhoods that could most benefit from traffic calming efforts.  At that time, groups of residents participated in a series of workshops where they could provide input to City officials and traffic engineering specialists.  An initial design was developed out of these workshops and in 2001, a petition was circulated to demonstrate overall neighborhood support for the plan.  An acceptance rate of 65% was required and obtained in order to move forward.

In 2007, the original design was modified and two of the roundabouts proposed on Cleveland St were eliminated.  No other major modifications have been made and Skycrest Neighbors has continuously worked toward encouraging traffic calming implementation.

The Traffic Calming project for Skycrest is approved and fully funded.  The contract was awarded at the City Council's August 21, 2008 meeting.  The project is managed by the City's Traffic Operations division of the Engineering Department.
